They Paint Horses Don't They?

Alex Hubbard Bent Paintings (Why Horses Paint)
Galerie Eva Presenhuber
Berlin
November 2, 2012 - January 19, 2013

Galerie Eva Presenhuber is very pleased to be opening its exhibition space in the Löwenbräu Complex with BENT PAINTINGS (WHY HORSES PAINT), an exhibition of new work by American artist Alex Hubbard.

In his first solo show at the gallery, the New York based artist presents his “Bent Paintings” and a video work. The sculptural character of the nine “Bent Paintings” breaks with conventions of classical painting, the geometrical two- dimensionality of traditional picture formats giving way to bent structures, some of them free-standing sculptures totally emancipated from the wall. As a continuation of his “Trash Paintings,” to which plastic objects are attached in the style of a material assemblage, both the support and the applied plastic objects are subsequently cast in urethane. While this collage of different trashy objects resembles a staged presentation of the flotsam and jetsam of civilization, they also seem to be dancing, arranged in a secret choreography, the movement of its individual items frozen. All “Bent Paintings” are based on the same painting, which is nine times molded and cast.

The Ripest Fruit, Art

It's Winter here in NYC, which means it's quite cold. Most fruits aren't in season anymore, but there's still some proverbial fruit on the tree. Check out No Fruit at the Root in Beijing. This show is set out as a maze that moves between dark and light spaces, and through three works that focus the viewer’s gaze so intensely on texture and surface detail that the subjects and sculptures themselves are effaced. The effect is not so much disorientating as displacing. No Fruit at the Root is on view until Jan 28, 2013 at Beijing Commune. Beijing Commune, 798 Art District No.4 Jiuxianqiao Road, Chaoyang District, 100015

Various anthropologists and poets tell us that even into the 19th Century, in early spring certain Gaelic villages would partake in the tradition of Beltane by making a bonfire and a mealy cake. The cake would be divided into lots, one for each member of the tribe, and dumped into a bonnet. A single chunk was covered in dust, and the person who drew this black piece was pushed into the fire.

Emmy Skensved's Materiality

Emmy Skensved, Vis-à-Vis
ESP
1086 ½ Queen Street West | Toronto, ON | M6J 1H8
January 10th- February 17th, 2013
Opens: Thursday, January 10th, 7-10pm

ESP is pleased to present Berlin based artist Emmy Skensved's solo show Vis-à-Vis.

For this series of work, Skensved mines her own materials for the subject matter. The textured acrylic paint used to produce the work is photographed and digitally altered to make graphic designs, which are traced back onto the paint before finally being cut and collaged onto the support. The actual brush marks and the illusionistic representations thereof make reference to one another, creating a self-referential loop. The digital process also leaves a distinctive mark on the end product.

Art with a nice taste

Amanda Valdez
Taste of Us
Jan 11 - Feb 17, 2013
Denny Gallery
261 Broome Street | New York, NY 10002

Denny Gallery just opened in the Lower East Side in NYC. Now showing is Amanda Valdez. Valdez makes colorful, multimedia works, populated by shapes that oscillate between representation and abstraction. The works have a very strong physicality, immediacy, and sense of embodiment. Various materials- embroidery, acrylic paint, fabric and canvas- are sewn together to become continuous, integral elements of the work. Sewn elements are not delicate. Fabric and stitches do not cede to painted elements, and the overall effect is one of materials acting out and asserting themselves.

Schiffbauerdamm 19

Nov 24 - Feb 2, 2013

Featuring: Inge Mahn, Antje Neppach, Pawel Polus, Lorant Szathmary, Frank Tornow

Emerson Gallery is hosting five artists from three countries with photography, conceptual art and painting in an exhibited titled The Arrival II.

Arrival always means a turning point. The hopeful or fearful eye out for what is to come can be one hand with joyful expectations or fears associated with. Arrival can also be read as a Christian motif, as we formulated in 2005: "The word 'arrival', from the Latin, adventus, Advent ', marks the beginning of the Christian year circle of preparation for Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Christ. Originally, the term "Advent" the Greek word "epiphaneia" (appearance, revelation) and was related to the arrival of the deity in the temple, or the visit of a king.

An Abstract Humor at The Painting Center

Wit
The Painting Center
547 West 27th Street, Suite 500
New York, NY 10001
January 29, 2013 - February 23, 2013
Reception: Thursday, January 31, 6-8 pm

Analyzing wit in reference to abstract art and language is a sure way to diffuse its potency, since its delivery feeds on the novel and unexpected. Disruption of the status quo helps to define humor. Modernist aesthetics surrounding form, balance and proportion still provide a common reference point from which to view abstract art. This shared visual language has become part of our collective consciousness and dictates our expectations. When preconceived standards are disrupted they can alter assumptions, surprise, reinvent and communicate wit.

Featuring: Marina Adams, Polly Apfelbaum, Joanne Freeman, Joe Fyfe, Barbara Gallucci, Phillis Ideal, Jonathan Lasker, Sarah Lutz, Doreen McCarthy, Mario Naves, Thomas Nozkowski, Paul Pagk, Ruth Root, Fran Shalom, and Stephen Westfall

Decenter Revisits The 1913 Armory Show

Decenter
Henry Street Settlement (Abrons Arts Center)
Chinatown/LES: 466 Grand street, 6-9
February 17, 2013 - April 7, 2013
Opening Reception: February 17, 6-8 pm
Panel Discussions: February 17, 4-6 pm
Abrons Arts Center Playhouse

At the 1913 Armory Show, the Association of American Painters and Sculptors showcased the "New Spirit" of modern art. A backlash of scathing criticism showed how baffled the general American public was by the seeds of abstraction in the Cubist artworks, which quickly became a shorthand expression for the structural changes brought about by modernity. They not only redefined artistic practice, but also altered our understanding of the process through which we perceive the world. Curated by Andrianna Campbell and Daniel S. Palmer,

Featuring: Cory Arcangel, Tony Cokes, Douglas Coupland, David Kennedy Cutler, N. Dash, Michael Delucia, Jessica Eaton, Franklin Evans, Amy Feldman, Andrea Geyer, David Gilbert, Ethan Greenbaum, Gregor Hildebrandt, Butt Johnson, John Houck, Barbara Kasten, Andrew Kuo, Liz Magic Laser, Douglas Melini, Ulrike Mohr, Brenna Murphy, John Newman, Gabriel Orozco, Rafaël Rozendaal, Seher Shah, Travess Smalley, Sara VanDerBeek

El Museo del Barrio gets superreal

superreal, presented by El Museo del Barrio is a photography and video exhibition that explores alternative realities from 1980 to today. The artists' own creations of alternative realities through the use of photographic mediums that traditionally assert our understanding of what is real directly challenge the viewer. Our worlds of landscapes, human figures, architecture, objects and natural phenomena are caught in a striking dichotomy: emphasis versus subversion, obscurity versus revelation. superreal features 150 works by artists such as ADÁL, Tania Bruguera, Vik Muniz, Miguel Rio Branco, Betsabee Romero, and Andres Serrano.

On the exhibition, curator Rocio Aranda-Alvarado states: "(this) is an exciting exhibition that explores alternative realities and challenges how the photographic lens is traditionally understood as a reflection of actuality. The majority of the works in the exhibition come from El Museo's permanent collection, and most have never been shown.

Spring Break In NYC

SPRING/BREAK Art Show
The Old School, 233 Mott Street, New York City 10012
Dates: March 6-11 2012
Daily Hours:12-9pm

This year check out the SPRING/BREAK Art Show, the new curator-driven art fair during Armory Arts Week. The 2nd Annual fair will inhabit Old School, a four-story schoolhouse located in NoLIta from March 5th – March 10th, 2013.

Featuring the projects of over 20 curators, the show will abandon the traditional focus on galleries – offering a “break” from the typical art fair model – and showcase a range of New York City’s curatorial voices, all surrounding a single exhibition theme - New Mysticism.

Utilizing over 20 classrooms, hallways, and unique areas in one of the city’s oldest schoolhouses, new art works will be on display, arranged by curators representing the more recent creative contributions of the Lower East Side, Williamsburg, Gowanus, and Bushwick. New Mysticism, the fair’s 2013 curatorial theme as described by Andrew Gori and Ambre Kelly, the co-founders of The They Co. and SPRING/BREAK Art Show, ‘examines how digital semiotics, the Internet, and technology at large, along with the old relics of 20th century visual culture together all provoke a new formal intuition within the aesthetic incantations of formal expression today – often more human than our advancements would have us know.’

Burn Your Homework. SPRING/BREAK Is Here!

SPRING/BREAK Art Show returns for it’s second annual exhibition at the Old School on March 5 – 10, 2013. NY Arts Magazine recently caught up with two of the show’s many curators, Ambre Kelly and Andrew Gori. This year’s rendition is titled, “New Mysticism.” Using this theme, more than 20 curators will show pieces that all fit the premise of the exhibit. Over 70 artists will be displayed within the Old School’s historic walls.

Kelly and Gori explain, “New to the initiative, SPRING/BREAK partners this year with online auction house Paddle8, with all sales accessible to Paddle8’s global collector community – making SPRING/BREAK the first fair to make works salable exclusively through a digital platform. An online preview of selected works launches February 27th, with sales going live March 5th – 10th, in tandem with the exhibition (see: http://www.paddle8.com/auctions/springbreak).”

They add, “Also new this year, fair organizers, artists, and curators have agreed to donate a portion of sales to the NYFA Emergency Relief Fund for individual artists affected by Hurricane Sandy. In addition, the auction will allocate a percentage of sales from artwork to Joanne Tucker and Adam Driver’s Arts in the Armed Forces (AITAF) initiative.”

Wharton + Espinosa : Pacific Design Center
8687 Melrose Avenue, Suite B275,
West Hollywood, CA 90069
Gallery Hours : Monday - Friday, 11-6pm

New York artist Jaqueline Cedar utilizes a fractured dimensionality in which bodies, light, and location intersect and coexist on parallel planes dictated not by a natural order but a dreamlike logic. Flesh, matter, and consciousness all fragment within Cedarʼs layered fields of disorienting space. Time, on the other hand is static, either nonexistent or in suspension, inducing an ambiguous sense of suspense or infinite irresolution.

Cedarʼs artistic genealogy is found in a heady concoction of early 20th century painting and faint hints of a west coast sensibility seeping in from her Southern Californian roots. Her most recent works cite Orphism as a key source, referring to the mystical content of painters rooted in cubism whose primary interest was the expression of sensation and infinite interrelated states of being. This reference poignantly surfaces in Cedarʼs enigmatic narratives of deep contemplative states and disjointed physical and psychological engagements, all charged with a permanent sense of foreboding - forever preparing and waiting for events to come.

It's Getting Woodsy in Bushwick

Eye Level with the Smallest Leaf: Louise Dudis
March 22 through April 28, 2013
Opening reception: March 22, 2013, 6-9pm
Robert Henry Contemporary
56 Bogart St
Brooklyn, NY 11206

Eye Level with the Smallest Leaf by Louise Dudis features 5 new large-scale pieces from her Fallen Tree Series that consists of multi-panel photographs of the forests of the Hudson Valley, and specifically trees that lie in the forests along the Hudson River’s edge. With its focus on the emotional and spiritual influence of the land, Dudis' work is a contemporary reexamination of the 19th Century’s Hudson River School of painting. Through the lens of 21st Century technology and environmental concerns, her work, influenced by American Transcendentalism, questions our impact and relationship to the land and explores ideas about time, the environment, spirituality and philosophy.

CHICKEN OR BEEF?
A Transcontinental Survey of Figurative Painting
Curated by Jesper Elg
Opening: March 6, 6-9pm
March 6 – April 20, 2013

Highlighting the ever-buoyant importance of the figurative, this show puts together works from artists across the globe. It proves to be an extensive overview of image-heavy work, taking a hard stand in favor of a painting practice under scrutiny in today’s abstraction saturated painting climate.

Featuring work by Allison Schulnik, Anders Oinonen, Anna Bjerger, Antonio Ballester Moreno, Barnaby Furnas, Bjarne Melgaard, Cecily Brown, Dan Attoe, Devin Troy Strother, Eddie Martinez, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Erik Parker, Geoff McFetridge, HuskMitNavn, Jannis Varelas, Jemima Kirke, Jocelyn Hobbie, John Copeland, John Korner, Jules de Balincourt, Katherine Bernhardt, Keegan McHargue, Lola Montes Schnabel, Margaret Kilgallen, Maya Bloch, Miriam Cahn, Misaki Kawai, Peter Linde Busk, Rosson Crow, Ryan Schneider, Tal R, Taylor McKimens, Todd James, and Troels Carlsen.

Neo-Expressionism and Power Chords

Hearing the guitar riff toward the end of Boston’s 1976 rock song “Peace of Mind” from a passing car radio the other day, I was a little surprised to find myself gripped by the sound, just as when I was a teenager and predictably compelled by such things many years ago.

The musical gesture is certainly a cliché, but I listened; a cluster of chords form a simple, blocky, repeated figure. The fully cranked electric guitar and amp pump out a sound soaked in a humming spectrum of overtone distortion. All other instruments drop out during the break and let it hang excitingly in the air. The aural space around it for that moment is vast.

The brief rhythmic guitar break is a statement of the drive that’s layered up and elaborated throughout the entire song - but here it is stripped down for a minute, right to the heart of the matter. Its a sonic emotional mission statement by the long-haired, red-eyed stoner at the center of it all. He soars for a moment through an inner space of pure feeling, whipping out an energy in this riff that majestically trumps all that boring “corporate ladder” and “competition” crap.

Brian Cypher at Schema Projects

Friday April 5th - Sunday April 28th
Schema Projects
92 St Nicholas Ave
Brooklyn 11237

Brian Cypher isn't afraid to do his thing. Working prolifically with all kinds of drawing and painting materials throughout his career, he seems to be comfortable producing powerful yet whimsical abstractions, no matter the scale he chooses. Schema Projects being a space specializing in works on paper, Cypher's drawings on display here are a selection from work produced over a twenty year span. Amazingly, one finds it a challenge to figure which works were created when. All of the works share a visual relationship governed by Cypher's ability to make seriously considered abstractions appear playful and easy.

Untitled Art Fair Establishes a Name for Itself

Amongst the extensive list of fairs exhibited at Art Basel, an underdog outshined the competitors with its fresh take on environmentally-minded art. Untitled, directed by curator Omar Lopez-Chahoud, made its debut this year by setting up camp right on Miami Beach. Showcasing up-and-coming artists from all over the world, Omar selected the appropriate galleries whose art was not only intertwined via commonalities, but had also complimented the airy space within the billowing tent. Given enough room to run caravans through its halls, Untitled offered wide paths bathing in sunlight that penetrated through several beach panoramas, as well as the thin ceilings of the tent. Working with architects and artists alike, Omar’s ambitions led him to create a fantastic art show within a refreshing space, which differentiated the fair from the stale, overcrowded indoor galleries we’ve all become accustomed to in the art world.

Selections from The Tribeca Film Festival 2013

For movie fans who are partial to movies without closure, the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival provides many good movies without complete endings. You can use your imagination to project a conclusion. Perhaps life has become so subtle and arbitrary, endings are no longer relevant. What might matter more is what brings people to the edge.

Hollywood of the 30’s and 40’s excelled at creating non-realities that a majority of moviegoers sought and accepted. The fields of dreams today are difficult to share. They are “private Idahos” that are so self-centered and bravely egocentric as to be pure cinematic narcissism. This festival had very varied and strong offerings. Here are some of the more personal films.

Maya Lin at Pace Gallery

One of the most elegant and thought-provoking exhibitions this year is Maya Lin’s Here and There.

Lin became the center of controversy in 1981 when she won the competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Still a student, and virtually unknown, her design was chosen from over 1,400 submissions. I remember seeing an exhibit of many of those entries and being astonished at the judges’ insightful choice of a delicate series of small color pencil drawings over the extensive technical plans and sculptured memorial models surrounding them. Lin’s clear vision was to create a “v” shape cut in the earth of dark granite with the names of those lost listed by the years they had fallen.

When Darkness Falls by Emese Krunák-Hajagos

Mankind has always been fascinated by darkness. In the beginning as the Bible says, “darkness covered the face of the deep” and since then looking into the abyss is part of human history. We associate the unknown with darkness and surely darkness will accompany our end. Why do we love dark visions such as the end of the world? Why is shivering with fear so appealing to our fantasies? Why do we always go for the worst possible scenario?

Paul Delvaux at Blain-DiDonna Gallery by Tony Zaza

While other fine arts venues continue to exploit the unwashed and uneducated, Blain-DiDonna Gallery continues to offer opportunities to re-examine artists whose work reinterprets our notions of the nature of artistic expression, while at the same time preserving their integrity and mystery. Following their stimulating Hans Arp show comes the enigma of Paul Delvaux, whose painterly gaze extends into imaginative mindscapes.

Delvaux lived for nearly a century. More an orphan from than a practitioner of the Surrealist agenda, the artist had been given a comfortable childhood and a classical education, but had no enthusiasm for the law career his father desired of him. After World War I, having briefly studied drawing for a possible architect career, he appears to have been seduced by the sensuality of art, and took to painting. At first, he worked on conventional landscapes of no particular significance. Later he mastered the skills that would characterize his most mature work.

He was blessed with the luxury of being able to travel at will, and this provided the source of his haunting imagery. In 1934, Delvaux entered the Walloon village of Spy, where he harvested the fruit for his fertile dreamstates in obscurity and solitude. From then on, each work was a ticket he gave to the viewer, enabling their journey through his hallucinatory landscapes.
