Big Group Show on Broadway

November Global Projects: Artists at Home and Abroad
Broadway Gallery
473 Broadway, 7th Floor, New York
November 16 - December 8, 2012
Reception: Tuesday, November 20, 6-8 PM

Globalization creates unexpected relationships and contrasts in contemporary art. This series focuses on the significance of exhibiting a variety of works in a pluralistic art world. Inspired by salon-style hanging, most commonly attributed to the Salon de Paris held during the 18th and 19th centuries; Broadway Gallery NYC continues this legacy with a contemporary and fresh outlook. Following a trend of previous exhibitions at Broadway Gallery NYC, this show pays tribute to the format of a salon hanging. It is a tradition that awakens contemporary culture to a dynamic collective consciousness.

Chelsea
November 20, 2012 - January 12, 2013
Reception: Tuesday, November 20, 6 - 8 PM

Eponymously titled, “Problem Play” takes its name from the 19th-century theatrical category of dramas that focused on controversial social issues. Problem plays commonly feature highly developed and morally conflicted protagonists. They are characterized by shifts between dark psychological drama and guileless comic material as well as irresolute denouements. The artworks assembled for this exhibition operate within the richly complex domain of the problem play, often employing dark humor to undermine hegemonic conventions and to expose issues of topical relevance.

Master of Ceremonies: Michael Alan Alien

Visiting Artist Arianne Foks (born 1982) lives and works in Paris. A multidisciplinary artist, she creates performances, installations and drawings. Using building blocks such as words, colors, rhythm, architecture, partners, pop-culture, and personal mythology, Foks adapts her work to the context, space and local environment: the piece emerges as a response to what she finds on site. Walking around in unknown cities without destination, she collect images, local habits and folklore to integrate them into her work and, in the process, shapes her own identity.

Reception: Friday, November 30, 7 - 10 PM

There are three questions that occur to anyone who looks at a work of art: What?…Why?…How? The work of art has a purpose in informing our view of the world, and perhaps, if it is successful enough, in effecting the world itself by adding a layer of meaning to what is known. “The Quantum Effect” explores the relationship between beauty, the known, and the unknown.

36 Cats & A Striped Pussy

A.I.R. Gallery's 10th Biennial "36 Cats and one stripe pussy"
A.I.R. Gallery
111 Front Street, Suite 228, Brooklyn
December 6, 2012 - January 5, 2013
Reception: Thursday, December 6, 6:00 PM

Throughout A.I.R gallery's history, many emerging and mid-career women artists have found a venue for showcasing new works in A.I.R's various exhibition programs, such as the Biennial. This year, the 10th Biennial: "36 Cats and one stripe pussy" is an exhibition of work by thirty-six women artists from the United States and abroad of diverse backgrounds.

In speaking about the Feminist aspect of the exhibition, the curator, Ingrid Schaffner, responds, " Is there something inherently Feminist about the juried exhibition? As a juror/curator you start with a vast number of different kinds of work submitted through an open call that is further democratized by having no names or other signifying clues as to an artist's identity, origin, or affiliation. Destabilizing and potentially productive, this process allows the curator to operate free of dominant paradigms and values. Of course the fact that all the artists in the A.I.R. Biennial are women is far less compelling than the imaginative power and politics of inclusion and disruption that continue to make Feminism such a formidable cultural force."

Curated by: Ingrid Schaffner

Artists Include: Isabel Barbuzza, Sarah Brent, Rachel Dawson, Diana Delgado, Princess Dennis, Al Denyer, Kate Donnelly, Annie Ewaskio, Louisa Flannery, Ghislaine Fremaux, Kathy Grove, Shanti Grumbine, Deborah Hamon, Cameron Harvey, Lori Hepner, Elizabeth Hoy, Heidi Lau, Sujin Lee, Leigh Leibel, Linda Levinson, Sarah Lynch, Li Ma, Choka Matsuda, Editha Mesina, Rosemary Meza-Desplas, B Milder, Gina Randazzo, Elanor Ray, Cathleen Sachse, Gyan Shrosbree, Barb Smith, Marta Spagnol, Mariko Spigner, Erica Stroller, Kelli Thompson, and Jenny Wiener.

New York's Paper Chase

Works on (with) Paper
511 Gallery
252 Seventh Avenue, Suite 12J
Chelsea
December 5, 2012 - January 31, 2013
Reception: Wednesday, December 5, 6 - 8 PM

511 Projects is pleased to announce the exhibition, Works on (with) Paper – drawings, etchings, screenprints, monoprints, watercolor paintings, digital prints, and book art by fifteen artists – emerging, mid-career, and established – whose work represents not only a full range of drawing instruments but also varied approaches to consideration of the basic support of the artwork itself (paper). Many of the works on view in the show illustrate a newly informed usage of paper as an important and active part of the art object: paper is seen as equal to any implement used in the making of the work.

“Anything on a surface has space behind it,” wrote Donald Judd in his article, “Specific Objects.” Judd was writing about painting and sculpture, but his assertion holds true for even the supposedly flattest surface of all, that is, paper.

511 Projects is the curatorial practice of 511 Gallery, which organizes exhibitions for museums, art centers, corporate spaces, and other venues.

Featuring: Allen Blagden, Ralston Crawford, Robert Kirschbaum, Leslie Lerner, Caitlin Masley, Joanna McClure, Jennifer Odem, Lesley Punton, Ross Racine, Susanne Ramsenthaler, Mary Reilly, Larry Rivers, Alex Schuchard, and Viviane Silvera.

Objects In The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear
Kravets/Wehby Gallery
521 West 21st Street
Chelsea
December 15, 2012 - January 26, 2013
Reception: Saturday, December 15, 6 - 8 PM

The Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of objects in the mirror are closer than they appear, a group exhibition of painting and sculpture. The artists present a wide range of abstract painting and sculpture that engage with depth and perspective. David Pappaceno’s painting appropriates female figures of art history, which he then juxtaposes with his own figures and tartans. Edging of the figurative, Steve Harding manipulates his paintings by continually layering and washing away areas of paint on his canvases, calling attention simultaneously to what is present and to what is no longer there. By layering chiffon and industrial material, Deshawn Dumas, creates both a delicate and anti-utilitarian work on canvas. Emily Weiner presents a diptych of a dual image; the first is an investigation of an old masters style portrait, the other is the same image broken down into its parts. Devon Costello presents new sculpture, which uses traditional ceramic making to investigate line and color. Beginning with a gingham pattern that is typical in textiles, Cheryl Donegan, creates a fractured sense of space by forcefully interrupting the regularity of the pattern.

Curated by Mika Gellman.
Featuring: David Pappaceno, Steve Harding, Deshawn Dumas, Emily Weiner, Devon Costello, and Cheryl Donegan.

Evoking Sound In NYC
ALL EARS: An event on the order of listening
Agape Enterprise
56 Bogart Street, Suite 1Q, Bushwick
December 16, 2012
One Night Only
Reception: Sunday, December 16, 5 - 7 PM

It is difficult to describe sound. In one case, when we listen to someone giving a speech, we desire to understand. We are aware of silences and wait for them to signal to us. It is a listening that strives towards a present understanding that is outside of sound. In another case, when we listen to what we call music, the sound itself signifies. In the first case, sound has a tendency to disappear; in the second, sense has a propensity to move towards sound.

Instead of hearing, which most often aligns itself on the order of understanding, how can we talk about a visual sound, evoke a form that is sonorous, suggest meaning that is not altogether comprehensible? What secret is yielded, made public, when we listen to a voice, a sound, an instrument, just for itself? How can we find meaning in resonance?

Organized by Hong-An Truong in conjunction with her solo project “To Speak A Language.”
Featuring: Mary Walling Blackburn, Cathy Park Hong, Simon Leung, Christopher Myers,

AgitPop: The Growing Occupation

AgitPOP – Curated by Anthony Haden-Guest
Guided by Invoices
558 West 21st Street, Chelsea
December 14 - December 22, 2012
Reception: Friday, December 14, 6 - 8 PM

Guided by Invoices is pleased to present AgitPOP, a group exhibition born of the growing occupation movement, curated by Anthony Haden-Guest. He describes the genesis of the show as follows:

The model of the art world as a system feeding the upper end of the luxury goods market, a one percent thing, is as sleekly potent as ever. But, thanks to the recession, ubiquitous geo-political turbulence and an ever more vertiginous wealth gap, other equally ambitious models can be discerned. And it was to my mind the double whammy of simultaneous shows of Marina Abramovic and William Kentridge at MOMA in 2010 which signaled that politics was back with a wallop.

Featuring: Betty Beaumont, Nin Brudermann, Molly Crabapple, Martha Colburn, Adam Dant, Gregory Green, Paul H-O, Narao Lazar, Liz Magic Laser, Lucia Love, Marjan Moghaddam, Alexandra Penney, Bill Plympton, James Romberger, Blake Sandberg, Stik and Ulrike Theusner.

Artists Line Up Coast To Coast

The West Coast’s largest and most comprehensive art fair returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center, and moves to the more spacious South Hall, this January 2013. Newly acquired by the Palm Beach Show Group (PBSG), the 2013 LA Art Show will build upon the concept of two distinct shows under one roof introduced at the 2012 event. A complete art experience, the 2013 fair will showcase four separate sections of work: The Modern & Contemporary Section, The Historic & Traditional Section, The Vintage Poster Section and The IFPDA Los Angeles Print Fair.

More than 50,000 visitors attended 2012 Show, which was described by NBC, Los Angeles, as an art fair that “brims with top-level talent.” The 2013 event will feature top galleries and expanded programming, including lectures, tours, special exhibits, and must-attend after parties beginning with a benefit Opening Night Premiere Party on January 23.

Know When To Fold Em...

Somewhere In The Fold
The Popular Workshop
1173 Sutter Street
San Francisco, California
January 17th, 2013.

There is a broad dialogue between publication and art object, far more complex than the straightforward union of the two into the ‘art book.’ Somewhere in the Fold is a survey of the relationship between the current state of publishing and the art practices of contemporary artists. These disciplines have converged into processes of editing and editioning, making once disparate fields singular.

The participating artists and publishers of Somewhere in the Fold approach this conversation by showing work that deliberately confuses the terms ‘publication’ and ‘art object’, while attempting to discover a place where they can exist together both in form and concept.

Featuring: Linus Bill, Glass, house, Little Big Man, Publication Studio, Ooga Booga, split/fountain, Cybele Lyle, B-B-B-Books, Anzfer Farms, Christopher Baird, Luke Fischbeck, Sarah Rara, Facundo Argañaraz, Sarah Hotchkiss, Kate Bonner, Nicolas G Miller, Hailey Loman, Aaron Finnis, Little Paper Planes, Peradam

Featuring: Sean Conlon, Atle Berner Andersen, Paul Fiore, Mitch Paster, Erin Perfect, Jensine Eckwall, Samantha Yudin
