NY Arts Has Intergalactic Friends

In front of me are two sculptures by Robert Llimos, of Alfa and Beta, a couple from the universe. These quasi-reptilian extraterrestrials constitute a unique “space-anthropological” reconstruction in painted terra cotta and bronze. The first impression is one of beauty and calm, the two beings looking thoughtful and intelligent with their elongated necks and big almond reptilian eyes. They have very small ears and no hair, a metallic tiara and scaly skin lending a quasi-aquatic countenance.

Mathieu Lefevre: The Stuff Things Are Made Of

The objects at art shows are but catalysts, propellers, instigators for what's important. What matters most is not the physical matter, but the simultaneously weightless and grand theories, contemplations, truths, connections and interactions that form within art spaces. In "The Stuff Things are Made Of" at artist-run space Regina Rex, a celebratory and intrinsic show commemorates the legend that was artist Mathieu Lefevre. Initially appearing whimsical and superficial because of its materiality, color and technique, Lefevre's artwork is a transportive submarine into often unexplored depths.

Like a Heatwave: Daniel Cooney Sizzles

The show incorporates archetypal prints of swimmers and divers, saucy images of porn stars in Speedos and bikini clad rich girls who reside by Hollywoodian pools, and abstract images where the naked body is spliced or converged. This final group of images subverts the very apparent sexiness and almost cliché theme, transforming Making Waves into an exhibit that uses summertime as a platform where questions of representation and the body can be explored...

Beverly McIver at Betty Cuningham Gallery

Beverly McIver's latest exhibition at Betty Cuningham Gallery introduces the inner tensions of her graphic, expressionistic work through contrasting tactile planes. The objects surrounding her figures simultaneously complement and disjoint the paintings. Vibrant faces and figures vibrate against juxtaposed static objects. The beauty of her work is thus concentrated on painterly gestures, fabricated movement and color peculiarities. Fizzle into her universe with NY Arts Magazine.

Summer of Photography at Carolina Nitsch Project Room hosts a conglomeration of images depicting the idiosyncratic, sexualized, and commodified America of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries. It features photographs by iconic, world-renown artists such as Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman and William Eggleston. The photographs encompassed are optically as vivid as is their visual content; bright colors complement images of the deranged physicality and peculiar beauty that is the authentic American experience.

Claes Oldenburg is an artist without flamboyance or careful propriety. He is thus very American, and being American, it is not strange that he was born in 1929 outside of America, actually in Sweden. Broadway Gallery Opening August 1 - August 23

August 1 - August 23
Opening Reception: Tuesday August 6th from 6-8pm
Broadway Gallery
473 Broadway 7th Floor NYC
broadwaygallerynyc.com

Globalization creates unexpected relationships and contrasts in contemporary art. This series focuses on the significance of exhibiting a variety of works in a pluralistic art world. Inspired by salon-style hanging, most commonly attributed to the Salon de Paris held during the 18th and 19th centuries; Broadway Gallery NYC continues this legacy with a contemporary and fresh outlook. Following a trend of previous exhibitions at Broadway Gallery NYC, this show pays tribute to the format of a salon hanging. It is a tradition that awakens contemporary culture to a dynamic collective consciousness.

A few notable themes in this exhibit that cross cultures are romanticism, spirituality, and humanity. Part of an ongoing series, Artists at Home and Abroad reaches out to the diverse community of New York. In addition to the exhibition on display at Broadway Gallery NYC, are several concurrent Internet projects, and a print catalog. Furthermore, this exhibit offers writers and viewers an exciting opportunity to submit essays and comments on the nature and significance of biennials, fairs and public exposure for new and emerging artists.

Prosecco Loaded Worker Bees

"I walk in a little unsteadily. The tent hums with activity. I feel as if I have just entered a hive—a highly chaotic, yet innately systemized heterogeneous structure. Each gallery is a single honeycomb, and within each of these chambers lies a hampered, assiduous little bee. Some of them nestle into their cells. Their delicate wings arch back, as their forelegs rest upon sleek white desks. The others, who don’t appear as self-satisfied, dart around the peripheries of their designated cubicles; their antennas begin to twitch if you appear just a little too interested. The space is permeated with a continuous buzz, and before I can help it I’m buzzing too."

Image

Iddhis Bing reads Victor Boullet

"He is canny, and not without his humors — although he is careful to avoid the comedian’s fate. One example: he invited the curator Damien Airault to a week’s residence at the Institute of Social Hypocrisy’s gallery in the Marais and — held him hostage. Airault could neither leave the gallery space nor communicate with his captor — the artist — for a week. Food was ferried up the side of the building in a basket."

What's That Behind You?

Gaitanidou’s solo show Risk Aversion is a study on human reaction to fear. The backdrop is the menacing environment of the wild that acts as a vacuum of logic and reason, thus allowing raw emotion to prevail. The bodies of the tribe’s schematic figures are covered with colorful motifs disclosing a precedent time of joy. The juxtaposition of the silent cries in their facial expressions intensifies the sense of horror when danger arises. It is said that when faced with fear, the choice to avoid danger either by escaping, confronting, or grinding to a halt before it, the so-called fight-flight-or-freeze response, is instinctive, almost primitive.

Perplexing Geometries: Sarah Bednarek

Artist Sarah Bednarek’s work in sculpture and drawing addresses ideas of the finite and the infinite, of the perception and possibility of a mathematical and geometric ideal—one that eludes our grasp in our everyday reality but can be faintly glimpsed in mental images and in the world of the imaginary. She articulates a sense of this other world through an array of endlessly evolving permutations of lines, tessellated planar surfaces, and multi-dimensional volumes. They are realized graphically on paper or through the physicality of her deftly crafted constructions which operate as interventions of the hand into the world of the purely optical.

What it means to be a Berliner:

This series, composed of about twenty Photographs, is placed in a long gone Berlin. This impression originates almost only through the clothes of the children. One time there is a little girl dressed in a leather dress with fitting gloves, one time it’s a souped-up boy in a custom made suit. We recognize the intention without getting our noses rubbed in it, an art that Erwin Olaf masters like no other.

Flesh and Bone pits a happily married establishment figure and Royal College of Art tutor, against a self-taught sadomasochistic gambler with a fondness for alcohol and the sleek underbelly of Soho.
It is difficult not to see this exhibition as a competition of interests and the interesting; the very personalities of both artists are quite evident—one only needs to look at the photographs in the exhibition of both artists’ studios to see the yawning chasm between them.

Opening to Success: New Work by Davor Vukovic

It's not every evening that you get to celebrate the opening of an artist's work like Davor Vukovic was fortunate enough to enjoy at Broadway Gallery last night. His impressive seascape-inspired abstractions span almost ten feet in any given direction and are full of vibrant colors. An expert in juggling hues, the artist has composed more intense areas to be cleverly balanced with calm passages inspired by the richly varied blues of the ocean.
The work was received warmly by the art-going public, drawing an interested crowd of SoHo intellectuals and art aficionados. One viewer of note was a representative from the Croatian Consulate, who had come to see the recent work of her esteemed compatriot. Davor was also the subject of a number of interviews, to be broadcast on Croatian Television. Milling about admiring the work while sampling a glass or two of white wine, everyone on hand agreed that the work was quite the success, installed in such a way as to come across as large windows to an immersive oceanic environment.
The exhibition, Adriatic Wonder, announced a brave new exploration for the artist, as he has generously increased the scale of his work to a much larger canvas. The viewer is now able almost to dive inside the work, becoming a part of Vukovic's animated world of color. The exhibition will now be on view at Broadway Gallery until October 29th, 2013.

Play with Your Food: Work by Klaus Enrique

Klaus Enrique is a New York based photographer whose work echoes that of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, with some surprising twists. For one, the subjects of his portraits—made from fruits, vegetables, and yes, even raw chicken—are captured in real time, in the glorious moments before they inevitably began to decay. The photographs are stunning commentaries on the fleeting nature of life and the complex beauty of living things. Enrique’s upcoming solo show at Rebecca Hossack Gallery will showcase such artfully constructed subjects as Princess Diana, Gandhi, and even Darth Vader.

The speed of interactions via new media allows for global artistic conversations previously unheard of before. In an attempt to integrate the numerous artistic languages, this exhibit was installed in a unique format, designed to begin conversations between the work of artists from NYC and across the globe. Two long parallel walls have been carefully installed to create dialogue in the spatial order. The Global Projects Series allows the viewer access to some of the past and current pivotal artistic ideas while introducing newer talent, to generate fresh creative energy through unexpected juxtapositions.

MAXWELL STEVENS SUMMER TABLE PAINTINGS

January 17 – February 7, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, January 22, 6 - 8 pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 12 - 7 pm, Sunday 12 - 5 pm, and by appointment

NEW YORK - onetwentyeight is pleased to present MAXWELL STEVENS, SUMMER TABLE PAINTINGS, a new solo exhibition testing the boundaries of painterly abstraction and photorealism within the context of contemporary portraiture and delicately painted modern interiors.

“I’m interested in the domestic arena as the primary site for our psychological and emotional experiences, and in how we exist differently, historically, within each passing moment. I try to use abstraction and the fragmentation of representational imagery to evoke this.”

In this selection of oil paintings spanning several years, the viewer encounters an array of intricacy & detailed brushwork executed in the individually rendered scenes underlying each picture. These intimate, miniaturized portrayals are subsequently overpainted in thick impasto, fragmenting and disrupting the initially calm scenery. This interplay arrives at a newly hybridized pictorial space, one that makes allusions to both the Dutch Golden Age and to Abstract Expressionism, yet clearly would not exist in any other era than our own.

Please join us for this special exhibition of paintings as we inaugurate an exciting 2016 season at onetwentyeight. For inquiries please contact us at summertablepaintings[at]gmail.com or +1.212.674.0244, +1.646.341.0175.

Gestures

Light tells us what time it is, and then time tells us something else. A camera gesture, with an exposure of half a second or longer, causes light rays focused by the lens to be distributed in a spontaneous way across the sensor–Intentional Camera Movement. The evidential nature of the photographic image is replaced by a celebration of the fluid and complex nature of reality.

“I have photographed alongside the New Jersey Turnpike for many years but recently decided to focus on the shipping containers near Elizabeth and Harrison. I am drawn to their geometric blocks of color. I seek places where these symbols of industry are juxtaposed against marshland, open skies and diesel trains, or stacked like a mosaic. To me this creates an interesting, layered composition. And, when I have the right light, these mundane industrial scenes become beautiful.”

Remembrance of Buildings Past
Michael Sackler

“As an architect working in the neighborhood of the 9/11 Memorial, I have become acutely aware of the fall and the rise of buildings. This project explores the collage effect within cities of older buildings reflected within the facades of newer buildings. Memories of a prior urban and historical fabric, now obscured by inexorable change, are found embedded within the rigorous logic of the present.”

Always–At the Seashore
Paul Stetzer

“The borders of land and sea reward my patient waiting and watching with beauty, calm, inspiration, solitude, insight as the constant kissing of the shore by the waves coalesces into a sense of always.”

GIRLSGIRLSGIRLS

Press release picture7763
“If I can’t dance I don’t want to be a part of your revolution”
- Emma Goldman

In the same way original libertarians defended the sex industry, Belgian born New York artist Serge Strosberg challenges freedom of speech and subject matter in the art world by talking about fifth wave feminist movements and old school pornography.

Recently we have been seeing hypocrisy in the form of religious conservatism taking over the Western World, climaxing with pope hiding female breasts on paintings in and around Vatican for the visit of the Iranian President; can it get any more ridiculous? For years most art fairs have maintained a high luxury sedated atmosphere and even non-commercial art fairs have remained politically correct. Soft nude paintings are removed from several European exhibitions. Why is it still rare to see art exploring the theme of pornography?

There are many reasons for the comeback of feminism Today. More than ever, Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign makes it a hot topic. However, feminism talked about by a male artist is still generally over-analyzed and overrated. This creates lack of freedom of expression for men. At the risk of being accused of objectification, Serge Strosberg does not just paint women; he paints humanity to contemplate enduring existential questions. Before that, he painted the gay subculture and prior to that he painted African immigrants in Paris, his friends, his neighbors, fellow artists, people he admired or found interesting.

This show is about Freedom. The Artist confronts the first movies from the adult industry (the victory of libertarians) with the last movements of the feminist artists Femen and Pussy Riot who use their sexuality to prove their freedom in their protest art practice directly aimed against patriarchy. While other great female artists of previous generations, such as Kathleen Hana, (the pioneer of the Riot Grrrl movement and the lead singer of feminist punk band Bikini Kill), did not let their “revolution to be televised”, Femen and Pussy Riot, on the contrary, became highly mediatized by the same patriarchal Western World they criticize. Their appearance is no longer controversial, the same as pornography which was once forbidden. Femen and Pussy Riot are all over the internet showing similarities with pornography by being bold, straightforward and obvious, using crude language and nudity.

Serge Strosberg creates a brave and voyeuristic installation - life size adult dvd store on a quiet New York’s still authentic East Village street, in Studio 26 Gallery, located in the storefront of the famous NYC’s Mosaic Building, two doors down from the world renowned guitar store TR Crandell Guitars.

Similarly to Damien Hirst’s Pharmacy and Banksy’s Pet Store, Serge Strosberg’s Girlsgirlsgirls viewers will be lured by thinking they will be entering a real adult dvd store where they will encounter in fact feministic imagery: monumental paintings that use cult adult movie posters from the “golden age” (original titles and similar colors) as backdrops, the original actors replaced by the activists advocating freedom for women; conceptual silkscreens with contrasting titles; LED light art objects; installation with dozens of fake adult dvd’s, video art juxtaposing S&M imagery, scenes of feminists protests and fragments from adult movies “Deep Throat”, “Debbie Does Dallas”, and Pussy Riot and Femen performances, as well as actual live provocative performance. This tightly packed small gallery space site-specific installation is well suited to contemporary New York City.

Freedom and Feminism are at stake in the 2016 American presidential debate. “Super Thursday” performance illustrating the present political chaos which encourages protests, will be presented on Thursday April 28, 6-8 pm starring Hillary, Trump, Pussy Riot, Femen impersonators and other performers. Get ready to choose your candidates!

Exhibition is curated by Marika Maiorova.
